What an amazing experience! We did the overnight cruise then decided to do a 2nd day cruise the next day as the weather changed from rain the night before to spectacular during the day. The rain made the waterfall’s just awwe inspiring the next day and wouldn’t change a thing! Big shoutout to Coach Driver Pauly and to Cheryl for fixing a hiccup in our bookings and made it all happen seamlessly! Rau on the cruise gave the absolute BEST commentary straight from the heart. The people are what made this trip incredible. I’ll never forget it.
The whole experience was totally amazing. All the crew made us feel very welcome. Kayaking was a gentle and relaxing activity that brought us close to nature where we saw penguins without disturbing them. Dinner was yummy and so was breakfast. In the morning the ship sailed along the fjord to the Tasman sea where we saw some Fur Seals. The crew also made a beautiful entry in my journal, thank you very much.
The Milford Mariner overnight cruise is an excellent experience. Milford Sound is absolutely stunning. Nice little cabin with ensuite & radiator (bring a small rucksack / overnight bag ). Great dinner & breakfast. Bar on board (card, not cash). Be prepared for wet weather - it poured with rain but that did make the waterfalls even more spectacular. Short trips in tenders or kayaks offered - wet if raining! Wonderful scenery. Unmissable experience.
We booked the tour as an overnight cruise to spend more time than with usual cruise in the Milford Sound and it was absolutely amazing. The crew was extremely friendly and welcoming, the food was very delicious, and the cabins are very nice. The best part though were very very insightful explanations provided with a lot of background information on the rich history and geography of New Zealand. Being Māori herself, our guide provided us with very detailed and authentic information. Thank you! Special were the water activities where we could do kayaking and jumping from the ship into the amazing clear water. Swimming in the Milford Sound! By Air
The fastest and most scenic option between Queenstown and Milford Sound is to fly, with window views over glacial valleys and the Southern Alps.
Flight connections operate multiple times daily in season; pair a flight with a RealNZ cruise for the close-up fiord experience. Flights are available via fixed-wing plane or helicopter and are weather-dependent.
There are two places to park your car at Milford Sound, one is paid parking, and the second is free parking:
Paid parking
This is closest to the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, only a 5 - 10 mins walk along a path with a beautiful view of the fiord. The paid parking is clearly signposted as you enter the small village of Milford Sound. Parking costs an hourly rate of $10. The car park is managed by Milford Sound Tourism, and the money collected is used to fund Milford Sound’s facilities and infrastructure. Overnight parking is available at the terminal for $30, from 3.30pm until 11am the following morning. This can be paid by card or paywave inside the terminal building. Payment machines do not accept cash.
Free parking
There is a free car park for day and overnight visitors located at Deepwater Basin Road, about a 20-minute stroll to the Visitor Terminal along a scenic forested pathway. Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour to park your vehicle and walk to the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, as you need to check in for your RealNZ cruise 20 minutes prior to departure. You should always allow extra time to check in and board your boat.
Milford Sound Overnight Cruise cancelation policy is that amendments may be made up to five days before travel. No refunds will be given within 14 days of travel.

Nestled amidst towering cliffs and lush rainforests, the breathtaking beauty and raw nature of Milford Sound captivate all who visit, but it also comes with its share of natural hazards. Visitors to Milford Sound should be aware of various natural hazards, including earthquakes, tsunamis, severe weather events, flooding, landslides, and avalanches. The Alpine Fault, capable of producing Magnitude 8 earthquakes, poses a significant risk of triggering landslides and tsunamis, while the area's mountainous terrain and high rainfall lead to frequent landslides and potential road closures due to flooding and avalanches.
Earthquake
The Alpine Fault runs approximately 800km up the spine of the South Island of New Zealand and is one of the world’s major geological features. Responsible for the prominent geological features that are evident in Milford Sound, the Alpine Fault is active, with rupture events occurring on average every 300 years. The latest significant earthquake was in 1717 AD. For more information, see the link here: AF8 website.
Analysis indicates that major ruptures are likely to exceed Magnitude 8. The next Alpine Fault event is likely to be very destructive and could trigger landslides and potentially a localised tsunami. An Alpine Fault rupture of Magnitude 8 is anticipated to damage critical infrastructure in Milford Sound, such as key road networks.
Tsunami
Milford Sound is susceptible to both local and distant-sourced tsunami events. Scientific analysis indicates that in the event of any severe earthquake (Magnitude 8 or higher), a destructive landslide (including submarine) induced tsunami could be generated. Supporting analysis also indicates that the substantial volume of water displaced by a landslide may result in a tsunami reaching very significant wave and run-up heights.
In areas such as Milford Sound, where numerous visitors are received each day, a landslide-induced tsunami of any significant height would pose a significant risk to people at Milford Sound. The only warning these people would receive of a potential tsunami is the onset of an earthquake. This section will be updated once a new risk assessment of landslide-induced tsunamis has been completed.
Severe Weather Events
Flooding
Milford Sound’s mountainous terrain results in significant annual rainfall, with the area receiving in excess of 7 metres of rain each year on average. Low soil absorption typically sees rain run directly into the sea, lakes, or high-capacity rivers throughout the area. It is not unusual to get rainfall accumulations of 200 mm in 24 hours with intensities of up to 30 mm per hour.
Whilst the roading infrastructure is well developed to cope with most heavy rain events, significant and sustained rain events have the potential to close roads and isolate Milford Sound while repairs are carried out.
Landslide
Landslides are a regular occurrence in Milford Sound due to regular severe weather and the area's soil conditions. They are primarily vegetation-based near the coast, where topsoil is limited; however, further inland, they have a higher content of rock and soil.
Snow/ Avalanche
Avalanches also threaten the road networks that service the Milford Sound area. While the preventative actions of the Milford Road Alliance (i.e. avalanche control) significantly reduce avalanche risk, avalanches continue to occur periodically.

At Milford where do you park and go to check in?
Please allow up to 45 mins - 1 hour to park your vehicle and transfer to the Milford Sound Visitor Terminal, where you must check in for your cruise 20 minutes prior to departure. Car parking at Milford Sound is organised by Milford Sound Tourism (MST). The main parking area is approx. a 10 minute walk to the terminal. Parking in Deepwater Basin is approx. a 25 minute walk from the terminal.
Are linen and towels provided on the Milford and Doubtful Sound Overnight Cruises?
Yes, bedding and towels are provided to all guests.
We are a group of three people and would like to book a shared quad-share room. Will this mean we would be sharing with another person?
Yes, you could potentially be sharing with another guest. Alternatively you could choose to pay for the entire quad cabin, or two double cabins, to ensure privacy. If you wish to pay for an entire quad cabin, please contact us directly.
Note: quad-share cabins are mixed gender.
What is the difference between a double room and a twin room?
A double room is a private room for two people, with one bed to share. A twin room is a private room for two people, with two single beds.
How much luggage can I take on my overnight cruise?

What weather can I expect in Fiordland?
Fiordland’s weather is what gives the region its unique character. Rainfall is what makes Fiordland a land of lakes, rivers, streams, waterfalls and fiords. Visitors should always be prepared to enjoy some rainfall during their stay. It is recommended to bring sensible clothing for cool and wet weather to fully appreciate your stay.

Is the boat accessible for individuals with impaired mobility?
When we are informed in advance about guests with hindered mobility, we make every effort to mitigate the impact by assigning rooms in proximity to the main areas. However, it’s important to note that our vessels are not optimally equipped for potential needs. While we extend a warm welcome to individuals with impaired mobility, all our vessel’s doorways feature a sea sill, there are no ramps within the boat, and a flight of stairs separates rooms from the main saloon.
What happens if the weather changes and we can’t fly out from Milford?
Your travel agent or the outlet where you purchased your Milford Sound trip will refund the flight component of your ticket. You will return to Queenstown by coach.
What is the Milford Sound Levy?
The Milford Sound Levy is paid to the Milford Sound Tourism authority and helps to maintain, preserve and develop the Fiord. For more information, see the Milford Sound Tourism website.
What happens if there is an emergency?
Our staff are trained to deal with incidents and in case of an emergency you should listen to their instructions. We have a portable defibrillator on each of our overnight cruise boats (Milford Mariner, Milford Wanderer and Fiordland Navigator).
